Hi hi! Happy Thursday!
I have a super busy day today, so I’m just going to jump right in to this date night cheese board for two.
SO yesterday I decided to have a date night at home for Mark and I for three reasons:
- We didn’t have one the week before.
- I’m going away this weekend so we wouldn’t be doing it this week, either.
- We realized a while ago that it’s really important for our marriage to keep dating each other on a regular basis.
On Monday I was flying solo for dinner and decided a cheeseboard sounded SO relaxing and satisfying, so I made one with camembert, sharp cheddar, summer sausage, grapes, pickled beets, red pepper jelly and assorted crackers. It was really lovely. HOWEVER, the entire time I was really wishing 1. I had wine and 2. I had bread with butter 3. I had goat cheese/jam/caramelized onions.
Either way, I was still really happy with it. Then yesterday I was like, we need a date night but I don’t want to spend a ton of money because I’m going away this weekend aaand the weather is rainy so I’d really rather stay cozied up at home in soft clothes and our record player… playing. I still had lots of cheeses left, grapes, jellies, crackers, etc, so I decided to make an epic cheeseboard.
- Summer Sausage
- Chorizo salami
- Goat cheese
- Sharp cheddar
- Monterey Jack
- Pickled beets
- Caramelized onions
- Caramelized onion hummus
- Tons of crackers (incl. graham crackers which are such a good addition)
- Pretzel buns
- Red Pepper Jelly
- Raspberry & wild berry jam
Things I would have added if I didn’t forget them at the store….
- Dried figs
- Smoked almonds/marcona almonds
That list seems pretty overwhelming… looking at it now. BUT we already had 3/4 of those things hangin’ out in our fridge/pantry from our regular everyday eating/snacking, so it really wasn’t a big deal. We also had a larger cheese selection than I think you need for 2 people because I just had a lot in the fridge already and I got the Monterey Jack free.
Other possible variations (there’s probably hundreds, but these sound good to me:
- Cheese twists (like the cracker cheesy breadsticky things)
- Bacon wrapped dates
- Blue cheese/gorgonzola with nutella or honey
- Apple slices
- Brie (obviously), gruyere, havarti, etc. Basically any cheese.
- Fresh berries
- Apricots/dried cranberries/dried mango
Literally the list goes on.
Basically, you can customize yours however you please and you can make it to serve 1 or 2 for a solo date night in, or for a date night for you and your significant other or even a girls night. It also doesn’t have to be as elaborate/fancy/expensive as a lot of the ones you see on pinterest.
I broke down the actual cost of everything on the board and it was $11.
These cheeseboards are easy $30 CAD in restaurants and they don’t come with this much on the board. Yes, sometimes it’s nicer to go out for a date… but when the weather is blah and you wanna save some dollas and have a really nice date night at home, this is perfect.
Also FTR, I couldn’t fit everything on the platter because I chose the smallest one we own apparently… so more crackers, cheese, jam and carrots were eaten on the side. It just didn’t look nice in photos. #bloggerproblems.
Cheers guys! Happy date night-ing.
